Boxing
The Jab
This is usually executed with the less dominant hand, for most
people this would be left hand with the right hand guarding the
face. The jab is a quick safe punch fired from the guarding position
keeping the wrists, fist, elbow and shoulder in line as the arm
is extended and then pulled back to maintain guard. The jab should
be fired straight out form the guard position, avoid pulling the
hands back slightly before punching which tends to telegraph your
intention to the opponent.
The Cross
Generally executed with the dominant hand, in most people would be
the right hand. From the guarding position, the fist is extended
forward using a twisting action on the shoulders and hips and
raising the rear heel so that the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulders
are in a straight line. The Cross is a powerful punch, the fist,
wrist and elbow must be in a straight line to avoid injury to
yourself.
General
Other punches practiced are Hook, the Upper Cut and all their
variations.
Footwork
An important factor in all boxing techniques is the foot work.
The knees should always be slightly bent, you should push forward
form the rear leg and backwards from the front leg and when moving
right push from the left leg and when moving left from the right
leg. This is to keep good balance at all times and be in a position
where you can move in any direction without tripping over your
own feet.
Guarding
Another important point to remember is to keep your guard up at
all times to protect your face and to use your elbows and arms
tight to the body to deflect or take the impact of any attacking
punch.
