ABOUT THE CLASSES
Each lesson is made up of several elements, varying according to the current curriculum and upcoming events such as gradings or competitions.
These elements include:

Fitness
You do not need to be fit to begin your Martial Arts journey, but to enjoy Martial Arts, and life, to the full, and to perform at your best, you need to be fit. Our Beginners Programme is designed to build up your base level of fitness, and all of our programmes include fitness, strength, and flexibility work, and with regular training you will soon start to feel the benefits!

Leadership
At Family Martial Arts, we don’t just teach punching and kicking. For our Lil’ Ninja and Junior age groups, Life Skills are an important part of what we teach; your child will learn about Respect, Discipline, Courtesy, and much more as part of each lesson.
For adults, the confidence gained through our Martial Arts will carry over into your personal and work life, and you will find you feel more positive and assertive.

Drills
Drills include boxing and kicking combinations either done alone, with a partner, or onto pads, and repeated in order to build up ‘muscle memory’ and improve physical conditioning and fitness. Other drills are used to aid the learning of simple and effective self defence techniques against a variety of possible attacks.

Line Work
This is an opportunity to learn and perfect techniques through repetition in a safe and controlled way. As the name implies, students work up and down the hall in lines performing their techniques.

Patterns
Patterns, or forms, are traditionally thought of as a series of attacking and defensive moves performed solo against numerous imaginary attackers. Some think of patterns as the ‘art’ side of Martial Arts, with little real self defence value.
At Family Martial Arts, we believe that encoded within the moves of the patterns are highly effective pressure point strikes, locks, and throws. Master Martin is a leading teacher in the UK of Kyusho Jitsu (pressure point fighting), and we believe that the moves of the patterns are of real value when taught and used properly. Up to Black Belt, you will learn one pattern for each grading.

Sparring
At Family Martial Arts we practice light contact sparring, and full protective gear is mandatory. All sparring is carried out under strict supervision to ensure everyone can spar safely, and above all enjoy it!
Sparring is where much of the blocking, striking and footwork which you practice in drills and line work starts to come together, and it’s great for fitness and confidence building.

Pressure Points (KYUSHO JITSU):
Master Martin is a leading exponent of Kyusho Jitsu, and the Dillman Method of Pressure Point Fighting; he holds a Master grade in this art, is a Dillman Karate International registered instructor, and has taught extensively on the subject in Europe and the USA. Chief Instructor Mr Allen also holds a Black Belt in Kyusho Jitsu.
We believe that encoded within the moves of our patterns (also referred to as ’forms’ or ‘kata’), are highly effective pressure point strikes, locks, and throws. Kyusho Jitsu is integrated into our patterns and self defence training at Family Martial Arts.
