Classwork
Classes are structured to provide the
learning and continuous practice of techniques. The program of each class
varies to suit forthcoming events, i.e. gradings, competitions, but the
basic elements of classes are as follows:
Linework
Linework is an opportunity to learn and perfect techniques in a safe controlled environment. As the name implies students are positioned in line in order of grade with the highest grades to the front. The Instructor demonstrates or describes a combination of movements which the students perform to count until instructed to turn.
Sparring
Sparring allows students to put into practise techniques and combinations learnt in class. All sparring is carried out under strict supervision to ensure safety of students, only yellow belts and higher grades are permitted to free spar. There are a number of set sparring attacks and defences, these help in leaning , focus , distance and timing and are generally for grading purposes. Free sparring, is where within sparring rules any allowed combinations of techniques can be used. The object is to improve your fighting ability but at the same time practice control and not to over dominate your opponent. All contact is light and body protection must be worn.
Patterns and Drills
Patterns are a way of practicing attack and defence techniques against an imaginary opponent. From recent interpretation of Patterns we know that many of the movements relate to the correct angle and direction of Pressure Point applications. Up to Black Belt, one Pattern is learnt for each grading.
We have many Drills to help in the learning of techniques these include, arm locks, breakfalls, pressure points, boxing, kicking, self defence, padwork, etc.
Fitness
To enjoy Martial Arts to the full, you need to be fit. We are not expecting you the be fit from the start, that comes with the training, You will be doing Stretches, Aerobic, Strengthening and Endurance work. Fitness is one of the benefits that comes with regular training.
Pressure Points
One of the schools specialities is Pressure Points, we have highly qualified instructors in this art, and host regular seminars with top Martial Artist to demonstrate this very effective school of fighting. Almost all fighting techniques can be improved with the application of pressure points. It is the hidden knowledge of the Old Masters and only in recent years become known to the west.
The true meanings of patterns and katas are exposed by Pressure Points. What were taught as blocks and stances which seem to have little use in actual fighting are seen to be very effective ways of hitting points to the meridian lines of the body, resulting in extreme pain or knock-outs, even death should circumstances call for it. All with the minimum of force,
in fact the more relaxed a person is the more effective the technique. Pressure Points work regardless of your opponent’s size even if they are drunk or on drugs. Although not taught as a separate discipline, Pressure Points are integrated into all aspects of training.
