Linework

Linework is the learning and practising of strikes, blocks and stances, carried out in lines as formed at the start of the class. The instructor will demonstrate or describe a combination of movements, which for instance could be:
“Starting right leg back, L stance, knife hand guarding block. Forward with right leg high section turning kick, spinning back left leg mid section side kick, knife hand guarding block, right leg L stance.”
He will then count, on each count the movements are repeated until the first line reaches the end of the training hall, the class then turns on the command “two step turn” and the same or a different set of combinations will be practised.
Line work takes both mental concentration and great physical effort to execute correctly and to continuously improve and refine techniques and is generally only carried out for short periods.
